Captions for Introduction images
The first image in the Introduction shows an view of Fingals Cave on Staffa. It is from John MacCulloch, A description of the western islands of Scotland, including the Isle of Man (London, 1819). See exhibit item 50.
The second image is a view of eroded basalt formations in the Vivarais region of France; it is taken from George Poulett Scrope, Memoir on the geology of central France; including the volcanic formations of Auvergne, the Velay, and the Vivarais (London, 1827). See exhibit item 63.
